Common Names: German Chamomile, Wild Chamomile, Scented Mayweed

 

Matricaria Chamomilla is native to europe and western Asia but is now naturalized throughout temperate regions worldwide, including North America and parts of Australia.

Traditional Uses:

Chamomile has a long-standing history in traditional European, Ayurvedic, and Middle Eastern Herbal Medicine. Traditionally, It has been used to: 

  • Soothe Digestive discomfort: Such as Bloating, Gas, Nausea, and Colic.
  • Promote Relaxation and restful sleep.
  • Ease Teething pain and irritability in children
  • Alleviate Menstrual cramps and mild muscle tension.
  • Soothe inflamed or irritated skin when used topically
  • Reduce Mild Fevers and symptoms of the common cold.

Who should avoid chamomile?

  • Pregnant individuals: While often used in small amounts, chamomile may have mild uterine stimulating properties and should be used with caution.
  • Those taking Blood Thinners (e.g. Warfarin): Chamomile may enhance anticoagulant effects due to its natural coumarins. 
  • Avoid prior to surgery due to potential blood-thinning effects.
  • Use caution in young children when using essential oil topically or internally. 

 

Historical Notes: 

  • Revered by ancient Egyptians as a gift from the sun god Ra for fevers.
  • Used by Hippocrates and Galen in classical Greek Medicine. 
  • Incorporated into medieval monastic gardens for calming teas and poultices.
  • Traditionally strewn on floors in homes and churches for its pleasant aroma and insect repellent qualities.
